First Night

28 October 2011

The first night of David Tristram’s “GHOST WRITER” went down a storm.

Here are some great comments for our audience:

Hi. My wife & I came to see Ghost Writer last night at Aston Cantlow. What a fabulous show it was! We were laughing from the start and thought the standard of acting was just brilliant.  We have seen lots of your productions and thought this was probably the best yet.  Thanks for a super evening’s entertainment and please pass on our congratulations to the cast and team.  We look forward to your next production. Best wishes, Adrian and Wendy Peters.

We came to see Ghost Writer last night and thought it was just terrific! A superb cast with some great acting and spot on delivery. Alex was hilarious, but everyone played their parts perfectly. A truly fab night. Why are you not touring this show?! More people should have the same treat we had! :-) Well done to all concerned! – Emma Chadwick

My husband & I came to see Ghost Writer last night and just wanted to say a huge thank you for a fabulous evening! We couldn’t believe we were watching amateur theatre. It was terrific.  Hope the other nights go as well for you all. Well done! – Jayne Green

There’s a full house tonight (Friday), but a few seats left on Saturday – get along – we wouldn’t want you to be disappointed!

Ghost Writer – A Synopsis

6 October 2011

The Ullenhall Players’ Autumn production at Aston Cantlow is Ghost Writer by David Tristram.

Here is a brief synopsis to whet your appetite……

A London theatre company decides to stage a new production of Shakespeare’s classic Hamlet – fronted by TV Soap star Julian Dando, and backed by a cast of second-rate hams.

At the last-night party is one Edward Pinfold, a promising young playwright, and husband of the talented but tempestuous actress, Ruby, who had played Ophelia.

Tragically, that very night, Ruby – a renowned reveller with a reputation for burning the candle at all three ends – is found dead in bed from an overdose of naughty pills and booze.

The theatre world went into a state of mourning that barely lasted into the afternoon. One year later, however, Edward remains deeply affected. Unable to face the emotional torment of living in his own home, he has moved into the attic room of one of his oldest actor friends, Alex.

Alex, by the way, is gay. Now, that may well have nothing to do with anything. But then again, it might. I mention it merely because it is a fact, though how pertinent a fact you will have to wait and see.

So, there you have it. I trust you have followed me so far. Because what happens next, as Alex once famously said, could be a bit hard to swallow. We join the story on the first anniversary of the death of Ruby Pinfold. May she rest in peace…..

It Runs … but where?????

1 June 2011

Here’s a great opportunity to see It Runs in the Family again in September 2011 at the Civic Hall. What a shame that the flier doesn’t give much of a clue as to which civic hall you can see it at. Well done Phoenix Players!!

In the press again!

18 May 2011

The following letter was found in the Redditch Advertiser, it is more about the Palace Theatre, but the Ullenhall Players get a good write UP!

WITH the current talk of the Redditch Palace Theatre I thought I would let you know that we have enjoyed yet another fabulous performance at the Palace.

We saw the Ullenhall Players in How The Other Half Loves. This was, as always, an hilarious performance with much hard work by the cast evident in the ease with which the performance was delivered.

We have also recently seen Murder On The Nile performed by All & Sundry, which was, again, excellent.

I’ve got to say that all the times over the years that we’ve visited the theatre we have really enjoyed our evening’s entertainment. Whenever I have contact with the staff to book or to visit, they have always been very helpful and friendly. A lot of people volunteer to assist at the theatre on performance evenings in the bar or kiosk areas and as ushers, they are always helpful, too.

Yes, I understand people saying that there are some issues with seating, parking and signs to the theatre but once there in the intimate, elegant theatre watching one of the splendid performances that take place there, you will see what charms it actually has too.

Thanks Jane – keep up the good work! We think that the Palace Theatre is great as well.

Thanks for your comments

Had a brilliant night out at the Palace Theatre Redditch on Friday 6th April 2011 when we went to see a play by one of our favourite playwrights, Alan Ayckbourn. We were in for an extra surprise when we `discovered` the Ullenhall Players. What a slick, professional delivery of `How the other half loves.` by your company! Thank you for a entertaining night out. Looking forward to your future productions.Joan Smith

Keep coming back to see what we have planned for the Autumn!

A Grand Finale

7 May 2011

John Slim local theatre critic has been in touch and put the following item on his website www.behindthearras.com

High-speed Players at the Palace

WHAT makes the Ullenhall Players just a bit different from most other groups?

Well, at a rough guess, it could be that when you go to see a Players show, you end up seeing it twice – with the second time lasting only about two minutes.

Players spokesman David Humphries explains: “Our two-minute reprise started in 2003, when we produced Ken Ludwig’s Lend Me a Tenor. This was received with such acclaim that in 2005 we decided to adopt this style of finale for all future spring productions at the Palace Theatre in Redditch.

“Production-wise, the finale is quite demanding. It requires split-second timing and enough space offstage for the cast to turn about and re-enter through the correct door. We normally use The Can-Can – The Galop Infernal from Jacques Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld – to drive the reprise and we use the natural pauses in the music to emphasise particular parts of the action.”

The Players do two productions a year – one at the Palace and one at Aston Cantlow Village Hall – but space constraints in a village hall usually mean that their signature finale is not attempted. It’s a policy that inevitably prompts good-humoured complaints from a thwarted audience.

Since they launched their reprise on their first startled audience, the Players have made it a habit, with It Runs in the Family (2005), No Room for Love (2006). Cash on Delivery (2007), Who Goes Bare? (2008),  Business Affairs (2009) and It Runs in the Family (again, in 2010).

The Players left their own village hall, their home since the 1950s, in September 2009 after the village hall committee decided to remove the stage and facilities for scenery storage.

Their latest visit to the Palace, reprise and all, is for How the Other Half Loves, the Alan Ayckbourn romp, until May 7.
